We all know that clothes go in and out of style, become worn out, damaged, and sometimes they just sit in our closets because what we though we liked turns into "Why did I buy that?". With the huge push to go green and reuse everything that we can, its only natural that we also recycle our clothing. AKA Design has figured out a trendy way to create fabulous pieces spawned from things of old. A glance into their Etsy shop and you will see just how creatively owner Alisa Newey has reconstructed old articles and resuscitated vintage items into fashionable and forward additions to any wardrobe. She collects vintage ties, buttons, and lace and reinvents them as beautiful handcrafted accessories.
We were given the opportunity to go behind the scenes of AKA Designs and learn about how awesome reconstructed accessories can be. Read below for more info about this weeks Chicktrepreneur: Alisa Newey.
When did you start your business?
I started my business in 2010 after attending a suitcase rummage market in Brisbane. I picked up two beautiful vintage silk ties and wanted to do something different and feminine with them.
I experimented with styles and vintage buttons and lace and since then I haven't stopped experimenting. I joined ETSY at the end of 2010 to share some of my designs with other lovers of handmade and AKA Design Accessories was born from there.
What is your design inspiration?
I find inspiration from so may areas; attending designers markets, trawling through vintage shops, patterns and designs from the fifties and sixties, just going to an alternative area and people warching. Design is taking something and reinterpreting it in a different way. For every design I have to have something some idea of style to start from and the design evelves from there. I learnt early in my design studies that often the best ideas come out of the mistakes. That is why I love working by hand because often something doesnt work out as intended and it is great.
Your accessories are really unique. Do you have a design background? Yes, I studied Architectural Design and worked in Architecture for two years. I have now miniturised and design accessories rather than buildings.
What is some advice you would give to an aspiring designer/female entrepreneur who wants to go into business for themselves?
If you have something you love to do or create then do it! Start small and get your name out there and let it grow from there. If you are creating something that you can wear then wear it yourself when you go out. You can be your own best advertisement and create awareness for your brand.
Thank you Alisa!! What awesome advice! Just goes to show that a talent can be turned into dollars if you put your mind to it.
