Optimization: How To Get Er Done!

What is the one thing that EVERY website needs?

Mondays Chicktrepreneur Tip Of  The Week we touched on optimization. It is the reason why some sites pop up on search engines. As much as you want to create a site that makes you happy, you also have to create a site that makes search engines happy.

Since search engines play such an important role, its probably a great idea to make sure your site is easily indexed and understood by them. You have 3 options when setting out to do this- You can do it yourself, Hire an SEO professional, or use an online marketing/SEO platform. If you have no experience with HTML you probably should hire someone who has experience or take a stab at doing it yourself with a little help from an online company. Sites like HubSpot & BrightEdge make the process super efficient and streamlined.

If you are a do-it-yourself kind of girl (or guy) then here's what you will want to focus on: Meta Tags, linking pages, content relevance, and page naming. All of this will make finding your website a lot quicker and easier.

The Meta Tags

Meta tags are what you see located near the top of your HTML pages, where information about the page itself is stored. This information is used along with your body's content to help give search engines a clearer picture of what your site is about.

Linking Pages

Always create a page to list sites that link to you. Link trading is very helpful and the more sites that link to your website, the greater your placement on the popular search engines. Especially if you can get moderately to highly ranked sites linking to yours.

Content Relevance

The words that you use in your title and description should be used in the content of your page. Keep in mind not to saturate your pages with keywords, chances are search engines will bypass them.

Page naming

Lastly, naming your pages with relevant words that directly relate to the content that is stored on them. If you have a page about "Tshirts" then name it "Tshirts.html". It doesn't get any easier than that.

Once you've done all of the things mentioned above, you will need to figure out a way to start analyzing your data. Which pages are getting the most hits? What are the referring pages? Where is your traffic coming from? Most hosting sites like GoDaddy have built in tracking that provides metrics on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Contact your provider and find out what you need to do to gain access to this information. Growing your customer base doesn't happen by chance anymore, a lot of the success of a website is strategic. Make sure your website is optimized and working for you and your business.
